Missed Saigon

I've just spent an hour writing a post all about my Vietnam experiences so far....then the hotel had a short powercut (prelude to another evening's thunder and lightning storm, I expect. With no rain if it's like last night). Again - I'm being beaten by technology (or the lack of it) - my mobile phone appears to have been set to send and receive only every 5th message and, yet again, a number of websites are blocked (including blogspot). I know - it's really not a bad thing, but it's very rare that I actually find time to sit and write anything (Helen was having a nap).

Still - too late now, we've got birthday* drinks, dinner and CAKE (one of Hoi An's specialties is its patisseries) waiting so the stories will, yet again, have to be put on ice.

*did I mention it was....? Oh? Right.

Happy Birthday Sarah. I wouldn't be concerned about not posting much - when people ask you what you did while you were away, spending a lot of time on the internet isn't going to sound too impressive!

constant reminders make me want to be a bit bah humbug about the whole birthday thing, to be honest.

Oh go on then. As it's you....

HAPPY BIRTHDAY.

Should I put it in my diary now for next year? Perhaps with weekly reminders?**

ST

** oh, no need. I have them already!

Have a lovely day. I'm off to the bluetones at the Rescue Rooms tonight, and they will forever remind me of meeting you, absolutely legless having just had your application for a sabbatical accepted. I'll have a drink and raise it to you later on.

Cheers!

Hi Sarah

Happy birthday you mardy cow. There's a letter waiting for you at home.

Guatemala has suddenly got cold, but the sky is blue and from my office window, I can a row of five volcanoes with the biggest gently puffing a plume of white smoke across the sky. A nice distraction from the slums, the crime, the pollution and the mental drivers. And the midgets. My UK colleague Carl is 6'5". Our bodyguard, Delmar is 4'10 (the norm). Delmar gave us a security briefing and said "Senores, if we get attacked, get behind me!". Carl and I looked at each other and said "Erm, how?"

I'm not kidding, even I feel like Godzilla walking down the street. Anyone over 6' goes into a village and they'll probably send in the military.

Tell me more about Beijing - worth a future 3 year posting??

Have a Coke and a smile?
V

Back at Hong Kong airport for a brief spell between Vietnam and Thailand (yes - I know it's not really 'on the way').
Now that I can get to Blogspot again - thanks for the birthday wishes (even the begrudging ones!).

Martin - you're absolutely right, of course, I'm just worried I'll forget all the wonderful experiences I've had - and recording them here was mostly an exercise for myself (next year's lunchbreak project now, I guess).

ST - funnily enough, I actually remember far more about that night at the Bluetones than I should have done. Happy Day!

Leah, Lizzy - thank you, thank you.

Vin - HELLO! Beijing? It would definitely be an experience...if the choice was there I'd go for Hanoi though. We shall talk when I'm home...provided your security small-person has done their job!
